About Guilford Youth Flag Football:
GYFF was added to Guilford Youth Football & Cheerleading program in 2004. The season has grown from 28 children playing on 4 teams. The 2007 fall season proved to very popular with over 64 children registered. The 2008 season shows the increasing popularity of the league and registration continues throughout the season. The program age categories are 6 - 8 years old. The games are played at the Long Hill Field. The fields are excellent and perfect for flag football. Games are held Saturday from 4pm. - 6 pm in the fall. The 2008 season will start on September 6th.
Why Flag Football?
GYF Flag Football was implemented to introduce children to football at a young age. The program teaches children the basics of football, from snapping a ball to throwing and catching. Children of all sizes and abilities find they can be successful at flag football. Flag football is non-contact, safe and fun for everyone, even the coaches and parents!!! Guilford Youth Flag Football helps boys aged between 6 and 8 learn the fundamentals of football. It also provides parents with an opportunity to coach a team and feel part of the GYF program. The GYFF program is set up for all standards of ability, from beginner to advanced. Every player is given equal opportunity to play every position. Parents and kids both find that as the league continues to grow, so does the standard of play. The Guilford Youth Flag Football allows children the freedom to learn the fundamentals of the game without having to worry about burdensome equipment and unwanted contact. Meanwhile, it can be an ideal stepping-stone for those wanting to eventually join the GYF successful full-contact youth leagues, ages 9 - 14 years.
The Season
The Guilford Youth Flag Football season is 7 weeks long. The season comprises 5 weeks of regular season play, followed by the playoffs in week six. The seventh week is Super Bowl, where the teams will be divided and play for the "Guilford Golden Football". All players in the league are eligible and will receive a certificate of excellence and a trophy.
Equipment
All youth players signed up for the program will receive a GYFF jersey. The league provides flag belts. The players must provide shorts and something to run in (any kind of rubber cleats or sneakers will do). It is recommended that players wear a protective mouthpiece.
Registration
If you would like to register for flag football, please contact coordinator Tom Bright at: flagfootball@guilfordyouthfootball.net. Or, you may simply show up during the season.
